IT giant SAP is curtailing cloud operations in Russia, and Deutsche Telekom is withdrawing from the Russian market
German business software manufacturer SAP is curtailing cloud operations in Russia. The company announced this on March 24 in its blog. Last month, SAP stopped selling its products and services in Russia and Belarus.
It is one of the largest players in the enterprise software market. For example, it is used by Gazprom and the Russian railway. However, they can continue to use the software that they have now and that they can support on their own. SAP notes that it cannot influence this.
However, collapsing the cloud is important because it shows the overall position of the company. After all, as reported by Reuters, last week the head of SAP Christian Klein defended the company's decision to continue serving certain industries in the Russian Federation — such as energy, healthcare or trade.
In an interview with Spiegel, the head of the Ministry of Digital Development, Mikhail Fedorov, noted that German companies can do more for Ukraine, in particular, completely leave the Russian market and break all contracts with the state and state structures.
So far, SAP emphasizes that it supports Ukraine: in particular, it helps order supplies for Ukrainian hospitals and provides its own technologies for organizations offering humanitarian aid. The total amount of donations from SAP and the company's employees exceeded 3 million euros and continues to grow.
In addition, another German telecommunications company, Deutsche Telekom, announced that it is stopping operations in Russia. The company is closing its development center in St. Petersburg, which employed about 2,000 employees.
