GitHub has started blocking the accounts of Russian companies and developers. Sberbank and Alfa-Bank are no longer available

Starting from April 13, 2022, the web service for hosting IT projects and their joint development GitHub began blocking the accounts of Russian companies and developers. As of April 15, at least dozens of accounts were blocked, including the accounts of Sberbank, Alfa — Bank and other companies, as well as individual individual developers.

Blocking details

In particular, Russian researcher Sergey Bobrov reported on the blocking of his personal GitHub account.

It is known that when blocking a personal account, it is designated as suspended, and when blocking a corporate account, it is designated as flagged.

At the same time, when a corporate account is blocked, access to Repository data may be maintained for several hours. But when you block your personal profile, access is restricted instantly. In particular, Issues and Pull Requests to other repositories disappear during deletion.

According to the publication, some of the blocked accounts did not contain private repositories, but only public ones. Some time after the block, individual users receive an email stating that their account can be managed from the sanctioned region.

When clicking on the links, you are asked to fill out an appeal and specify the company or user's relationship with North Korea, Syria, Crimea, "LPR" and "DPR" (link from Sheet 1, link from Sheet 2).

As you know, on April 6, 2022, it became known that the US Treasury Department imposed full blocking sanctions against Russia's Sberbank and Alfa-Bank. The sanctions include freezing the assets of banks and banning US citizens and companies from doing business with them.

Recall that on March 2, The GitHub platform announced that they would monitor the situation and would not allow everyone, including ordinary developers, to be blocked.

Earlier on our forum, users repeatedly called for pressure on GitHub with a demand to block the accounts of Russians. In particular, a petition was published to ban the platform for Russian developers.
