The PyTorch library is moving out of Meta's direct control and will become an independent organization

The open-source artificial intelligence research library PyTorch, launched in 2016 by Meta (then Facebook), is becoming an independent organization of the PyTorch Foundation, which will be subordinate to the Linux Foundation, Engadget reports.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg noted that over the past 15 years, PyTorch has become the leading standard for the community of artificial intelligence researchers. PyTorch is used by about 80% of researchers who present their work at major machine learning conferences such as NeurIPS or ICML.

"We have created libraries that support some of the core areas of artificial intelligence, such as Torchvision, which is the backbone of most current research in computer vision. The framework will continue to be part of Meta's research and engineering work on artificial intelligence," Zuckerberg wrote.

The PyTorch Foundation " will have a broad governing council consisting of Representatives from AMD, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Meta, Microsoft Azure, and Nvidia." To ensure that the PyTorch Foundation does not lose sight of its values, the organization will adhere to four principles: "stay open, maintain neutral branding, stay fair, and form a strong technical identity."

Meta plans to use PyTorch as its primary artificial intelligence research platform, as well as support the organization financially. Zuckerberg noted that the company plans to maintain a "clear division between business and technical management" of the organization.
