GitHub closes Atom code editor: what developers are offered
On June 8, the official GitHub Blog announced that they were stopping development of Atom. All projects will be archived on December 15, 2022, and after that they will be read-only.
The main thing is that GitHub decided to close the free Atom code editor. The reason is a gradual decrease in the number of users. Recently, Atom has not added any new features, but only supported existing and updated security features. On December 15, 2022, the company will switch the repository to archive mode. From now on, projects will be read — only-users will not be able to suggest changes. Instead, the company will focus on developing the Microsoft Visual Studio Code editor and GitHub Codespaces. DetailsAtom is a free and open source text editor that GitHub introduced in 2011. Atom served as the basis for the Electron platform, which allowed you to create thousands of applications, including Microsoft Visual Studio Code, Slack, and others.
GitHub stated that it aims to ensure a "smooth" transition of users to an alternative solution, so the community has until December 15, 2022. within six months, the GitHub team will inform Atom users about the release of the product on atom.io.
In 2018, Microsoft bought GitHub for 7 7.5 billion. Then the developers of the Atom editor left the project.
