The most powerful and greenest supercomputer in Europe has appeared: how it will be used

On June 13, Finland launched LUMI, a European supercomputer for high — performance computing. With over 375 petaflops of performance, LUMI is the fastest supercomputer in Europe and the third fastest in the world. LUMI is also considered the greenest supercomputer in Europe and the third largest in the world.

Homelumi is based on Hewlett Packard Enterprise's Cray EX supercomputer. It was created in Kayaan, Finland, in one of the greenest data centers in the world. The supercomputer runs only on renewable energy sources, uses natural cooling systems and reuses waste heat, which is provided by up to 20% of local district heating. LUMI's eco-friendly solutions set it apart from other supercomputers, which are known for their extremely intensive energy use. LUMI serves as a platform for international research cooperation and for the development of artificial intelligence and quantum technologies. Some of the computer's resources will focus on industrial research and development: vaccines, cancer diagnostics, climate change mitigation, and more.

Details

LUMI is owned by the EuroHPC Joint Venture, which is managed by a consortium of 10 countries: Finland, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Norway, Poland, Sweden and Switzerland.

The total budget for supporting the operation of the supercomputer is 144.5 million euros.

The system will be available to users at the end of September 2022.
